Playing Chess in Geneva: Clubs and Tournaments
Geneva has one of the densest chess club landscapes in Switzerland: the Fédération genevoise d'échecs counts twelve independent clubs in the city and its surrounding area alone. This guide collects what is actually accessible in today's club scene. Where something could not be verified, it is not listed here.
Chess clubs in Geneva
The Fédération genevoise d'échecs (Geneva Chess Federation) runs the clubs in the region. The following selection shows clubs whose game night is publicly listed. A dash means the club does not publish the time permanently, so it's worth checking the club's website.
| Club | District | Game night |
|---|---|---|
| Club d'Échecs de la Ville de Genève (CEVGE) | – | Monday, 7:15–11:30 pm |
| Club d'Échecs de Genève (CEG) | Eaux-Vives | – |
The complete list of all twelve member clubs is kept by the Fédération genevoise d'échecs, including clubs in Versoix, Bellevue, Collonge-Bellerive and Carouge. Please check each club's website for current dates – game nights regularly shift during school holidays.
A note for a first visit: the CEG is based in the Villa Le Plonjon, in the middle of the Parc des Eaux-Vives on Lake Geneva – one of the more unusual club addresses in the German- and French-speaking chess world. CEVGE meets on Monday evenings at the Maison des Associations and, with more than four hours of opening time, leaves plenty of room for a spontaneous visit.
Playing chess outdoors: chess tables and meeting spots
A municipal directory of public outdoor chess tables could not be confirmed for Geneva. That said, the Parc des Eaux-Vives around the CEG's villa itself offers a fitting setting for a game outdoors, before or after attending the club evening.
Anyone wanting to play on the go is best served by a foldable travel set that fits in any bag and is ready to use at almost any table.
Tournaments and open events
Over the season, the Fédération genevoise d'échecs organizes the cantonal championships and league competitions in which Geneva's clubs take part with their teams. Current announcements are published on an ongoing basis on the federation's website.
Anyone entering a tournament for the first time should know beforehand what equipment is required. The dimensions are not a matter of taste but are regulated – see our article on the official tournament chess standards.
Chess for children and teenagers
With the École d'Échecs de Genève (EEG), the city has its own institution devoted exclusively to chess teaching, located in the Maison des Associations – evidence of how seriously Geneva takes youth development. For specific course times, it's worth getting in touch directly, as these depend on the school year and level.
Getting started at home requires little at first: a board of a sensible size and pieces that smaller hands can grip well. Which square size suits which king height is covered in our article on chessboard size.
Geneva and chess history
Reliable historical sources on Geneva's early club history, such as those documented for Zurich or Vienna, could not be found for this article. What can be clearly documented, on the other hand, is the exceptional density of today's scene: with twelve independent clubs in the canton alone – from the city itself to Versoix and Bellevue to Collonge-Bellerive – Geneva is one of the most densely organized chess regions in Switzerland. This variety of small clubs, often tied to a neighbourhood or municipality, sets Geneva apart from cities with a single dominant traditional club.

From the Parc des Eaux-Vives to your own board
Anyone who has played with borrowed equipment at a club venue quickly notices the difference to a well-made set of their own. For a regular game night, our handcrafted wooden sets are a good fit – solid wood, visible grain, pieces with noticeable weight. For a game in the park, a foldable travel set that fits in any backpack is ideal. And for a gift to a club member after a tournament win, it's worth looking at our engraved sets: a dedication in the wood outlasts any trophy. Schachatelier is a Berlin brand. Take your time and have a look around.
