Chess Sets with Metal Pieces

Metal pieces give a chess set a different feel from wood: they bring more weight to the board, stand more steadily and set a clear contrast against the warm surface of the wood. This collection gathers every Schachatelier set in which metal pieces stand on a handcrafted wooden board – from the round mosaic board with a drawer to sets in the style of the Roman Empire.

Finishes range from copper-silver through gold-silver to black-silver. Boards and cases are still made by hand, so every example has its own grain. Shipping is free above a minimum order value: to Germany, Austria and the USA from €50, to the other EU countries from €99, and to Switzerland, the UK and Canada from €100.

Frequently asked questions

How do metal pieces differ from wooden ones?

Metal is denser than wood. The pieces feel heavier in the hand and stand more stably on the board. Visually they contrast more strongly with the wood, which is why these sets are often chosen as collector's or display pieces.

Which finishes are available?

Depending on the model: copper-silver, gold-silver or black-silver. The exact finish of each set is stated on its product page.

How should metal pieces be cared for?

Wipe them dry, or with a slightly damp soft cloth, then dry them off. Avoid abrasives, metal polishes and solvents, as these can attack the surface finish.
