Shipping, customs and engraving
Which countries does Schachatelier ship to?
Germany, Austria and the EU, as well as Switzerland, the United Kingdom, the USA and Canada. Details for Austria and Switzerland are on dedicated pages.
Is shipping free?
Yes, above a minimum order value: to Germany, Austria and the USA from €50; to the other EU countries from €99; to Switzerland, the United Kingdom and Canada from €100. Below that, shipping costs are shown at checkout.
Are there customs duties for deliveries to Switzerland, the UK, the USA or Canada?
No. We cover customs duties and import charges. You pay nothing extra on delivery. Within the EU there are no customs duties anyway.
How long does delivery of an engraved chess set take?
To Germany, Austria, the EU, Switzerland, the UK and the USA usually approx. 3–7 business days. Engraving is done after your order is received and can occasionally add a few business days.
How much does the engraving cost?
Nothing extra. Engraving is included in the price of every personalisable chess set – up to 30 characters for names, a date or a short dedication. For inspiration, see our engraving ideas.
Where are the chess sets made?
By hand, by experienced craftsmen in selected partner workshops – at different locations depending on the model. Model selection, order processing and customer service are handled by Schachatelier in Berlin.
Ordering from Europe: returns and exchanges
I'm ordering from another EU country — how do returns and exchanges work?
German and therefore EU consumer law applies: a 14-day statutory right of withdrawal, plus a voluntary 30-day return window for non-personalised items. Exchanges run as a return plus a new order. Register returns by email first; refunds within 10 business days. Engraved items are excluded from withdrawal.

Who is behind Schachatelier?
Schachatelier is a brand of SchachAtelier Berlin, founded in Berlin in 2026 by owner Özgür Özel. We select the models, handle every order and run customer service. The chess sets are handmade by partner workshops with more than five years of experience that have already delivered thousands of orders worldwide.
How can I pay?
With PayPal, credit card (Visa, Mastercard, American Express), Apple Pay or Google Pay. In selected countries, Klarna is also available.
What if my chess set arrives damaged?
Email us right after delivery at info@schachatelier.de, ideally with photos. We review every case promptly; statutory warranty rights apply.
Is Schachatelier a legitimate shop?
Schachatelier is a brand of SchachAtelier Berlin, a registered sole proprietorship in Berlin, Germany: owner Özgür Özel, member of the Berlin Chamber of Commerce (IHK), VAT ID DE463334467, full details in our legal notice.
