Playing Chess in Nantes: Clubs and History
The Cercle d'Échecs de Nantes, founded in 1967 and today the largest chess club in the Pays de la Loire region, even hosted the French Olympiad team for a training camp in 1992 – with Kasparov's former coach Iossif Dorfman as guest trainer. This guide collects what is actually accessible in today's club scene. Where something could not be verified, it is not listed here.
Chess clubs in Nantes
The Cercle d'Échecs de Nantes (CEN) is by far the largest club in the city and offers an exceptionally full weekly program. The following overview shows its opening hours. A dash means the club does not publish the time permanently, so it's worth checking the club's website.
| Club | District | Opening hours |
|---|---|---|
| Cercle d'Échecs de Nantes | City center (Pôle associatif) | Monday–Friday from 4:00/5:00 pm, Saturday 10:00 am–12:30 pm |
The complete list of all member clubs is kept by the Fédération Française des Échecs. Please check the club's website for current dates – opening hours regularly shift during school holidays.
A note for a first visit: the CEN is based at the Pôle associatif on Rue Félix Thomas, easily reached by tram line 2 (Saint-Félix stop). With opening hours on six days of the week and dedicated supervisors for every session, the club is one of the most accessible in France. It describes itself as the largest chess club in the Pays de la Loire.
Playing chess outdoors: chess tables and meeting spots
A municipal directory of public outdoor chess tables could not be confirmed for Nantes. The most reliable way to find an open game remains the CEN, whose opening hours cover practically the entire week.
Anyone wanting to play on the go is best served by a foldable travel set that fits in any bag and is ready to use at almost any table.
Tournaments and open events
As the largest club in the region, the CEN regularly hosts and takes part in the championships of the Fédération Française des Échecs. Historically, the club already hosted a national training camp for the French Olympiad team in 1992, ahead of the Chess Olympiad in Manila – evidence of the club's importance beyond the region.
Anyone entering a tournament for the first time should know beforehand what equipment is required. The dimensions are not a matter of taste but are regulated – you can read up on them in our article on official tournament chess standards.
Chess for children and teenagers
The CEN teaches children from the age of 6 and, with its full weekly program, covers practically every afternoon. The club also offers workshops for middle school students at partner schools such as Campus Loquidy, held there once a week during the lunch break and partly taught bilingually in French and English.
Getting started at home takes very little at first: a board of sensible size and pieces that smaller hands can grip easily. Which square size goes with which king height is explained in our article on chessboard size.
Nantes and chess history
Founded in 1967, the Cercle d'Échecs de Nantes experienced its most prominent moment to date in 1992: FFE President Jean-Claude Loubatière was looking for a venue for the French national team's training camp ahead of the Chess Olympiad in Manila – and found it in Nantes. Iossif Dorfman, once Garry Kasparov's personal coach, came as guest trainer and gave a lecture on the Najdorf Variation of the Sicilian Defense. Eric Prié also gave a simultaneous exhibition on that occasion.
The national team players present included Olivier Renet, Eric Prié, Marc Santo-Roman, Jean-Luc Chabanon, Gilles Miralles and – then still at the beginning of his career – Joël Lautier, who later became one of the strongest French players of his generation. The fact that a regional club like the CEN was entrusted with hosting such a national team training camp underlines the importance Nantes has held in French chess since the 1990s.
