Playing Chess in Toulouse: Clubs and History
The Échiquier Toulousain was founded in 1913 and today has more than 200 members – from children to experienced adults. This guide collects what is actually accessible in today's club scene. Where something could not be verified, it is not listed here.
Chess clubs in Toulouse
The Fédération Française des Échecs (French Chess Federation) runs the clubs in the region through its Comité de la Haute-Garonne. The following selection shows clubs whose opening hours are publicly listed. A dash means the club does not publish the time permanently, so it's worth checking the club's website.
| Club | District | Opening hours |
|---|---|---|
| Échiquier Toulousain | City centre (Artilect FabLab) | Tuesday, Wednesday & Friday, from 5:30 pm |
| Club d'Échecs International de Toulouse (CEIT) | Lapujade | Tuesday–Friday 3:30–8:00 pm, Saturday 3:00–7:00 pm |
The complete list of all member clubs is kept by the Fédération Française des Échecs. Please check each club's website for current dates – opening hours regularly shift during school holidays.
A note for a first visit: the Échiquier Toulousain meets at the Artilect FabLab right in the city centre and offers free play for everyone on Wednesdays from 5:30 to 9:00 pm. With six opening days a week in the Lapujade district, CEIT has one of the most generous offerings in the city – it is closed only on Mondays and Sundays.
Playing chess outdoors: chess tables and meeting spots
A municipal directory of public outdoor chess tables could not be confirmed for Toulouse. The most reliable way to find an open game remains one of the two clubs, especially CEIT with its busy weekly schedule.
Anyone wanting to play on the go is best served by a foldable travel set that fits in any bag and is ready to use at almost any table.
Tournaments and open events
Both clubs field teams in the Haute-Garonne leagues and in the national competitions of the Fédération Française des Échecs. Current calls for entries and tournament dates are published on an ongoing basis on each club's website.
Anyone entering a tournament for the first time should know beforehand what equipment is required. The dimensions are not a matter of taste but are regulated – see our article on the official tournament chess standards.
Chess for children and teenagers
CEIT runs its own chess school for children under 16, with sessions on Wednesday afternoons and Saturday mornings, for an annual fee of around 160 euros including support at competitions. The Échiquier Toulousain offers two youth classes on Wednesdays (2:00–3:00 pm and 4:30–5:30 pm) as well as further lessons on Saturdays from 10:00 am – with a free trial lesson before signing up.
Getting started at home requires little at first: a board of a sensible size and pieces that smaller hands can grip well. Which square size suits which king height is covered in our article on chessboard size.
Toulouse and chess history
Founded in 1913, the Échiquier Toulousain is one of France's historic chess clubs and has established itself as a fixture in the city for more than a century. Today it has more than 200 members of all ages and playing strengths – from children just starting out to ambitious adults – making it one of the largest and longest-standing clubs in south-western France.
The more detailed milestones of this century-long history, as documented for clubs in Paris, Lyon or Marseille, could not be found for this article. What can be clearly established is the continuity: a club that has existed without interruption since 1913 and today has more members than ever before has come through two world wars, numerous social upheavals and the digital transformation of chess without losing its identity as a club.

From 1913 to today: Toulouse's chess tradition you can hold in your hands
Anyone who has played with borrowed equipment at a Toulouse club evening quickly notices the difference to a well-made set of their own. For a regular game night, our handcrafted wooden sets are a good fit – solid wood, visible grain, pieces with noticeable weight. Anyone wishing to honour the century-long history of the Échiquier Toulousain will find boards with character and patina among our collectors' pieces. And for a gift to a club member after a tournament win, it's worth looking at our engraved sets: a dedication in the wood outlasts any trophy. Schachatelier is a Berlin brand. Take a look around.
