The woods used include beech, oak, lime and walnut. Because every set is made by hand, the grain differs from piece to piece. Every model marked as personalisable can be engraved, and the engraving is included in the price. Which wood is best for a chess set?

Beech and lime are light in colour, evenly grained and affordable. Oak is harder and shows a more pronounced figure. Walnut is dark and dense and is mainly used for sets with storage or a lock. Light and dark squares are created by combining or staining the woods.

Which size suits me?

FIDE recommends a square size of roughly 1.25 to 1.3 times the base diameter of the king. A king 9.5 cm tall therefore fits a square of about 5 cm and a board of roughly 50 cm. Boards between 30 and 38 cm suit travel and the living room table, 45 to 55 cm suit regular play, and 60 cm and above are for display.

How does the engraving work?

Engraving is included in the price on every model marked as personalisable. You enter the text during checkout and it is applied to the wood before dispatch. Processing time is stated on the individual product page.
